In 2020, the Internet Crime Complaint Center received 19,369 Business Email Compromise complaints with adjusted losses of over $1.8 billion. That doesn’t include victims outside the U.S. and unreported losses. Scammers primarily target U.S. businesses that work with foreign suppliers/buyers or regularly perform wire transfer payments. The scam succeeds by compromising legitimate business email accounts through social engineering or computer intrusion techniques. Businesses of all sizes are targeted, and the fraud is proliferating.
