The U.K. ranks No. 1 for Florida’s biggest foreign investor, responsible for 64,500 jobs in the state, while Floridian exports to the U.K. totaled $1.0 billion in 2019. U.K.-owned companies with offices/branches operating in Florida span a range of industries, including aviation and aerospace, life sciences, ICT equipment and photonics.
U.K. companies in Florida account for 64,500 jobs, making the U.K. the leading foreign direct investor in the Sunshine State. Florida continues to firmly establish itself as the location of choice for blue-chip British and Irish companies, and according to Dun & Bradstreet, there are 271 U.K. companies with 1,235 branch locations in Florida, excluding retail. These businesses span industries such as defense and aerospace, information technology, financial and professional services, life sciences, photonics, logistics, telecommunications and more.
In 2019, total merchandise trade between Florida and the U.K. totaled $3.4 billion, making it Florida’s 15th largest market for bilateral trade. In the past five years, bilateral trade has grown by 21.8%, and 35.3% in the last 10 years. Florida exports to the U.K. in 2019 totaled $1 billion, making it the state’s 19th largest export market. The leading exports to the U.K. included aircraft, optical fibers, paintings and drawings and art, fuelwood, and coin. Florida imports from the U.K. in 2019 totaled $2.5 billion, making it Florida’s 11th largest import market. The leading imports from the U.K. included turbojets and turbines, beverages and spirits, vehicles, yachts and parts of balloons.
The U.K. ranks second in the number of visitors to Florida. In 2018, 1,498,000 people visited Florida from the U.K., which accounted for 10% of total international visitors to the state. Florida has three strong Sister City partnerships in existence with the U.K. These partnerships include Lauderdale By The Sea’s Sister City partnership with Henley-on-Thames, United Kingdom, Mount Dora’s Sister City partnership with Forres, Scotland, United Kingdom, and Sarasota’s Sister City Partnership with Dunfermline, Scotland, United Kingdom.
