Florida’s small and mid-sized companies are uniquely positioned to capitalize on an international market eager to do business with the Sunshine State
Florida’s unique combination of strategic location, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and highly-skilled and multilingual workforce make the state an ideal location for international trade. More than $60 billion in Florida-origin goods were exported last year, and more than 60,000 Florida companies – the second-most in the nation – are active exporters.
Promoting Florida in strategic international markets is essential to keeping the state competitive. Companies that sell overseas create twice as many jobs as those only selling in the U.S. market, grow an average of 18 percent faster and are more resilient to domestic economic downturn.
As the state’s principal economic development organization, Enterprise Florida, Inc. (EFI) offers a full menu of export support services including export counseling, market information and foreign trade matchmaking services. Last fiscal year, EFI conducted more than 30 international trade missions and trade events designed to assist Florida companies with finding clients in target markets worldwide, resulting in more than $820 million in projected export sales.
With six trade offices across the state and 12 international offices, EFI provides export counseling support to thousands of companies from all industries. Target sector trade grants are one of the many tools EFI offers to assist Florida small businesses with discovering new markets. These grants enable companies to participate in EFI trade shows and U.S. trade exhibitions that they would otherwise not be able to attend.
One company who has benefited from this program is Endoscopy Replacement Parts Inc. (ERPI) of Newberry, Fla. As a leading after-market parts supplier for endoscopic instruments, ERPI’s business had grown and matured to that of an international exporter, but the company was still missing access to key markets in South America, Europe and the Middle East.
Since working with EFI, ERPI has entered into several new markets, including Brazil, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Germany and several Middle Eastern countries. International business now accounts for 65 percent of ERPI’s overall sales.
