Florida’s pavilion was largest of any state at world’s leading life sciences trade show
ORLANDO, FL (December 22, 2014) – Today, Secretary of Commerce and Enterprise Florida, Inc. (EFI) president & CEO Gray Swoope announced that the EFI-led trip to MEDICA resulted in more than $151 million in projected sales. Florida’s two-story pavilion, the largest of any U.S. state at the event, showcased 25 small and mid-sized Florida life sciences companies and organizations.
Secretary Swoope said, “I congratulate Florida’s 25 companies on their success at MEDICA this year. Through international shows and missions, EFI is able to enhance opportunities for Florida companies and, in return, companies can help grow Florida’s international footprint and add jobs. Because of the success Florida companies have year in and year out at MEDICA, the state is recognized around the world as a business super-state.”
MEDICA is the largest medical trade fair worldwide and was held in Germany from November 16-19. Florida’s pavilion allowed companies and organizations to market their medical and healthcare products to an international audience, and demonstrate the innovation and expertise that makes Florida a leader in the life sciences sector. The Florida Pavilion provided private meeting rooms for companies to meet with life sciences leaders from around the world. This year, companies from other countries identified Florida’s pavilion as a central meeting place, further expanding the state’s visibility to show participants.
Florida companies and organizations participating in MEDICA and the Florida Pavilion this year included:
Several of the companies attending MEDICA 2014 have traveled to the show with EFI previously. Without assistance from EFI, many companies would not be able to attend and, without the pavilion, would not be as successful in efficiently reaching such a large and important audience.
Jonathon Graff, Director of Business Development for Apira Science said, “We have attended several Enterprise Florida events worldwide, and the experience is always reliably the best of any other event. The assistance of the staff, particularly when outside the U.S. is top-notch and extremely beneficial to our growing business. These are the only shows where our clients and distributors remark on how easy it is to do business. In sum, I consider that our growth, in the EU particularly, is largely due to introductions made at MEDICA, and our UK/EU distributor considers it the most valuable show of their year.
David Bello, President of Endscopy Replacement Parts, Inc. said, “The international trade shows have always had a positive impact on our sales as 60 percent of our sales are international. By attending these shows we obtain new global customers as well as meeting with existing customers. We have also forged personal relationships with companies outside the scope of our business. We have in the past received trade grants that definitely have helped our company grow, thanks to the efforts of Enterprise Florida.”
Peter Eggert, Vice President of Gaumard Scientific said, “Being a unique simulation product provider at MEDICA makes Gaumard a must-stop, and key competitors do not exhibit at MEDICA. This gives us an edge with distributors who are coming here annually to visit their suppliers. This and our continued innovation makes our trade partners realize that they cannot risk not working with us. Thanks to international trips with Enterprise Florida we have definitely experienced a surge in visits to our booth in the past couple of years and our national business development has been taking off.”
Total projected sales from recent EFI international events include:
International trade and foreign direct investment accounted for about one-sixth of the state’s economic output last year and supports an estimated one million jobs. Florida has the highest trade surplus among all states, with total trade exports plus imports hitting a record of $162.2 billion. Florida has a number of strengths to leverage, including one of the fastest-growing international economies, strong air and seaport infrastructure, and a large and well-qualified multicultural workforce.
