Enterprise Florida, Inc. (EFI) is a partnership between Florida’s business and government leaders and is the principal economic development organization for the state of Florida. EFI’s mission is to facilitate job growth for Florida’s businesses and citizens leading to a vibrant statewide economy. In pursuit of its mission, EFI works closely with a statewide network of economic development partners and is funded both by the State of Florida and by private-sector businesses.
Enterprise Florida was created in statute (288.904 F.S.) as a public/private organization with its board composition outlined. A policy-driven Board of Directors oversees the organization, comprised of appointed members and a diverse group of investors representing some of the nation’s most notable corporations in Florida and the nation.
The statute requires that the organization create a mechanism to raise private funds through corporate involvement to help fund economic development in the state. Corporate sponsors who serve on the board contribute $50,000 to support the activities of the public-private partnership, which is allowable under the law. Also, statute (288.901, F.S.) states that there shall be 14 appointed members of the EFI Board (6 appointed by the Governor, 4 from the House of Representatives and 4 from the Senate). All appointed members are subject to Senate approval.
Currently, the EFI Board of Directors has 62 voting members representing both the public and private sectors. Members include the Governor and Florida Cabinet, elected officials, individuals appointed by the Governor and corporate sponsors.
