GOVERNOR SCOTT'S BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MISSION TO SPAIN

Locations: Madrid

Dates: May 21 – 24, 2012

Attendance: 60

Overview:

Governor Scott led a four-day business development mission to Spain, joined by more than 60 officials from various government offices and private businesses. The mission focused on increasing opportunities for companies from Spain – Florida’s 34th largest trading partner – to invest, grow and create jobs in Florida. The mission’s goal was to recruit more foreign direct investment for Florida.

Florida provides a home to more than 400 Spanish companies covering a range of industry sectors. The size and scope of Spanish investment in Florida demonstrates what an attractive business destination the state has become for Spanish businesses. Spanish companies that have located in Florida use the state as a platform to grow their businesses in the Western Hemisphere, benefiting both economies. For Florida, the bilateral relationship is vital. Not only is Spain one of Florida’s top trading partners, but it is one of the largest investors in Florida.

During the mission, nearly 500 new jobs in Miami-Dade County were announced by Spanish companies: Total Bank, Miami City Tour, and OHL. Since the mission, BBVA Compass opened their Miami office, creating an additional 45 jobs.
